Sham, do you mean someone filled the stamping (letters) with paint ? I've never seen that before. I expect that someone wanted the lettering to stand out and might have done that. I doubt if they did it at the factory but you never know.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Black in stamps is pretty normal. Or is that one actually filled in with something?

I've seen this before on some old firearms.

The black stuff I am referring to looks like fine dust and the majority can be removed with just a clean rag.

When I see this stuff on old firearms, usually the firearm has been well kept and has been unused/untouched for a long period of time.

I don't really know what it is, but I think it is some form of surface corrosion and oil mixed together.

The first thing I think of when I see this black dust is that the carbon is leeching out of the metal somehow. I don't know how true that is, though.

Oh, now I get it. I've seen blades stained like that before. I don't know what causes it, but I'm pretty sure it's a form of staining. Like a patina, but totally uniform.

That, good sirs, is an exceptionally stable form of rust. It protects below the surface... is a patina...

For what it's worth, I had an old W&B with the same blacking or patina on it.

It was awfully uniform for being accidental though, I assumed it was intentional. The uber-rare "W&B Onyx" line, as it were...

I had a Boker with the same black patina, which covered the blade and tang completely. I made the mistake of trying to remove it, which took several hours of buffing and sanding. The results were not worth the effort-I think it looked better with the patina. For what it's worth.....
