Thread: Crown

I was poking around the local antique shop this morning and bought a Crown Razor Company straight that is in very good condition but needs honing. It came with a box but it was not for this razor but for $12.00 I think I did okay.

Nice score! I've heard good things about the Crown Razor Co. and at that price you really cant argue with it..!

There were quite a few companies at the turn of the last century with "Crown" in their names. I have one made by the Crown Cutlery Co., which was made in Germany and is a very good shaver. Most razors from this era were very serviceable and I'm sure you'll be happy with yours once it is shave ready again.

I will try to get a pic or two up. It is made by Crown razor company in Boston. When I started cleaning it up it had more pitting than I first realized, making a mirror polish impossible without losing the etching and maker's mark.

Walt's correct, there were a bunch of Crown razor companies. The Crown Razor Company of Boston operated around 1900 - 1930, according my my Goins' Encyclopedia.

I think Crown Razor of Boston falls into that category of quality American and German razors from small companies that just aren't well known "marquee" brands. As you found, these can be had for great prices. I just purchased this one in really good shape with the etching intact and minimal wear, and was very impressed by how it cleaned, tightened, and honed up.
