    Default Wade & Butcher

I picked up a Wade and Butcher at a gun & knife show today. I know nothing about straight razors but would like to start shaving with one. The guy told me this would be a good one. It has Wade and Butcher's celebrated razor on a clear yellow plastic handle. The blade is 5/8 and dull as hell.

Wade and Butchers are great shavers. If you could take some pictures and post them we can tell you what sort of shape it's in and get you on the path to shaving with it.

Clear yellow sounds to me like blonde horn. I agree that W&B's make great shavers, but it really would take pics or a better description for us to be able to tell you if this particular one can be made shave ready and if it will be worth the time/money to do so.

But you've got the bug, and that is what is important. Welcome to the fold.

Dull as hell means the guy who sold it to you and told you it will be a good one is clueless himself. There's no way to know how good of a razor is until it's properly honed and used, and that's where he failed.
The chances are fairly good though, but that's all that one can say at this point without even seeing the condition.

Your best bet would be to send it out to a honemeister for sharpening. You really should post a photo to insure that the condition is good enough to make it worth sending it out for honing. Show the blade open and include the scales in the photo.

Here are couple pics sorry I didnt post them to begin with. I'm a knife maker and I thought about rehandling it my self but I dont want to decrease its value if its a good one. I'm not a collector I plan on being a user. I gave $27 for it so I don't have much invested at this point.

To be honest with you it looks pretty far gone to me. I would look in the classifieds here on SRP the next time you go to buy a razor until you've got more experience in what to look for. Just IMHO.

It's obvious the blade has been ground down, but judging by that beefy tang, that was once a much larger Wade and Butcher.

It's a great brand, but that one is no longer a very good example of a good razor. Neat looking scales, though.

It looks like it has served its service..
I would advise to return it if possible.

What's there looks like it came from a 7/8" or larger, from what I can see of my own razors. Maybe it was cut down to remove a
crack or something. Those scales are nice though, see if you can find a nice WB blade needing scales and your in business.
