    Default American or German???

Sorry in advance but no pictures.

What is it with old straights that say "N.Y." or "New York" and state "Made in Germany" on the blade? Are they made in Germany, are they made in America, or is the steel bought from Germany and reworked in America, in which case it is not made in Germany? I have two of these and I see them in antique shops all the time. For instance, In my hand I hold a F.A Clauberg—sounds German enough to me (and I can't remember every name I've read about). Directly below it on the tang, it reads. . . it appears as:

    F.A. Clauberg
    NEW—YORK
    MADEINGERMANY

Stamped on the reverse side is: TONSORIAL GEM

    Maybe a German, American Immigrant?

Well it would definitely be made in Germany - likely imported for sale/distribution. There were some large import firms, and some hardware stores imported as well.

On yours, I would guess that F. A. Clauberg was the importer or the store that did the resale. While you can bet it's a quality blade, there is likely no way to know which factory/maker actually made the blade.

FA Clauberg was my first razor. I can guarantee you a sharp but more importantly a comfortable shave.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
