Sorry in advance but no pictures.

What is it with old straights that say "N.Y." or "New York" and state "Made in Germany" on the blade? Are they made in Germany, are they made in America, or is the steel bought from Germany and reworked in America, in which case it is not made in Germany? I have two of these and I see them in antique shops all the time. For instance, In my hand I hold a F.A Clauberg—sounds German enough to me (and I can't remember every name I've read about). Directly below it on the tang, it reads. . . it appears as:

F.A. Clauberg
NEW—YORK
MADEINGERMANY

Stamped on the reverse side is: TONSORIAL GEM

Maybe a German, American Immigrant?
