Thanked: 4Newbie razor experience/review!!
Hey guys, so I have recently joined this wonderful site and very thankful for all opinions, reviews and help in general. I have recently purchased a razor from ebay and wanted to comment on it. The appearance of the razor and price caught my eye. After placing an order over a week ago, it finely arrived yesterday. I was really exited to unpack it. I grabbed the razor and automatically felt that it was lacking the practicality. The razor is poorly made, the handle is too bulky. The pining job is terrible. When folding the razor, the blade of the razor cuts in to a wooden wedge, in thus preventing an achievement of a perfect edge. After 40-50 minutes on the 1K, only a have of the blade began displaying an edge. If I would know about these problems before buying, I would most definitely stay away from buying it. Now since I already have the razor, I'm thinking about making the best it and turning it in to a project.

Hi Gregory;
Welcome to SRP and the wonderful world of straight razor shaving!
I'm no expert on this subject, but by what I see in the photos in the link you posted, that razor was never intended to be a shaving tool. It looks more like a pocket knife fashioned to look like a straight razor. You might want to post some additional photos of the razor's shaving edge, and ask the opinion of the senior members and expert shavers on SRP.
It's easy for us new straight shavers to get a bit excited by all the shiny stuff for sale on ebay. I know I've made some hasty and regrettable decisions myself. I recommend that you check out the SRP Wiki and read the beginner's guide to straight razor shaving. You might also want to buy Lynn's DVD, The World of Straight Razor Shaving, which has a segment on purchasing razors and shaving equipment from ebay, and what to look out for. There's tons of helpful info in these links.

The SRP classifieds link is a great place to buy razors and shaving equipment. I've purchased a nice razor from a member, and have been very pleased with it.
Best of luck to you!
Larry

Every single of us made mistake somewhere. that is why SRP is in here help us out.
Problem is not many of us asking question before spending money.
Any way.
i would say you can use that Damascus knife for as a box opener. you will need to open so many stone or razor boxes anyway. RAD AND HAD WILL make that knife useful.

There was some talk about these razors a few days ago, and the concensus was that they may not be optimal for shaving.
As to whether you can put an edge on it, that will really depend on the steel the razor is made from! Keep an eye on the edge under a loupe and see if it starts to crumble or microchip at all, and if it does then the steel is not up to shaving with.
Make sure you keep your pressure ultra light and ensure you get good contact with the whole edge as you hone.
Good luck and keep us posted!

I think you would be better off starting with something with known quality. This 'razor knife' may or may not be capable of taking a shaving edge, and if it is it will likely be tricky to get there.
Given your lack of experience I think at this point it's a waste of time.

I think this is the other thread.
I'm with gugi on this one. Concentrate on learning to hone a blade that has been proven to take an edge, since the jury's still out on this one.
