Default Filarmonica from Classic v Friodur's v Hess v Hart?

    I need some advice gents?

I want to get a good blade<$250 and a cheaper blade<$70. Any advice on the above or any other blades would be appreciated.

I have large hands and like the clasic plain look of razors. Not too much fancy stuff.

Are the Classic Filly worth that much over the Friodurs for $170?

    Take it easy,

Have you checked the FAQ entry for "best razor"? The only person who can answer that question is you.

That said, I paid USD 100 for my Hess 99 and 2 Friodurs. I consider all three decent deals. Incidentally, I would not pay more for any of thw other razors you mention. And as you can see in the reviews, I used to own a €27 razor that outshaved a Filarmonica EPBD - for me.

    So, it's all relative.

    Happy shopping.

    Robin

Not IMO. To put things in perspective, those (Filly) were priced at $99 a year ago, when they supposedly had the last available stock. At that price, they were a decent buy.

You're interest is all over the map. Finding a large Hess to match the NOS Friodurs and Hart sizes will be a wait, probably long, even for a 5/8's. The Classic Filly and Hart are not full hollows where the Friodurs and Hess are. You also have some carbon and stainless steel blades in your choices. What exactly are you looking for besides a large blade?

As noted above the prices have gone up on the Fillies and way above their value. Unless you have money to burn that is not a good choice. I don't have a Hart razor ( ) but I do have the other three. All shave well but I wouldn't pay the going eBay prices for them and others I have that are not over proced yet shave as good. Best advice it to keep your eyes open for a Sheffield, Solingen or american steel blade that fits your size criteria and is within your budget. If you stay away from the 'hot' brands you may find you can get several for the price of one of the razors you are looking at. Also note that what one person may say is good you may not like as well as others. Try to find a meet in your area or offer to arrange one. That is the best way to see and possibly try different razors before you make a purchase.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the great advice gents.

The reason I ask is when i was buying de's the vintage gillete's look good in the picks but when you put em in your hand to shave it's like what's this, it was so small.

I wanted to see if 5/8 or 7/8 were both comfortable in the hand and not something really small.

Really in the end I found that the ability to make good lather was more important than razor or blade. I just ask because i've never even held a straight and don't know if straights really are that different to each other?

My advice , start with something simple Dovo Special for example.
Learn how to shave and strop then jump on the big expensive razors.

    Hello, Kenno:

I fully concur with my friend Mainaman. Right now what's most important is to hone your skills, from razor technique to making luxurious lather. Plenty of time and opportunity lie ahead to explore the razor market.

    Regards,

+++1 on the advice offered by the previous posts. I wouldn't buy any of the str8 razors you mention as an entry level razor. You can get a good quality str8 razor for a whole lot less to develop your skills with before moving up to higher end--and price--shaving instruments.

Start with a Gold Dollar from either Seraphim or RupRazor for under $50.
