Default Mirror polish maintenace & rust preventation

Is it ok to apply some 0.25 micron diamond paste to the blade and rub it there? Is it fine enough to maintain the mirror polished surface or does it make things worse?

    Moi Sami,

I wouldn't use diamond paste for maintaing the mirror surface. Specially if you have any etchings in that blade. I think such things as regular car wax, Autosol etc work ok.

Thanks for reply. This particular razor is made from carbon steel and it has no etchings on it at all. The blade is ok right now and i'm going to keep it that way too as well as I can. This occurred to me just in case some minor scratches or corrosion shows up someday.

I use a metal polish, such as MAAS to polish up blades. I've never tried it with diamond paste. If I'm not mistaken, some buffing compounds have chrome ox, so the idea of using pastes on the blade itself makes sense. But I think for what you are looking for, even .25 would be too abrasive.

I use it all the time on a Q-tip, does very well for polishing. Try a spot and look you can always drop to some other compound. 0.25 microns is about 59,000 grit.

Actually if you ever want to experiment take a piece of flat hard steel like razor type and rub it on a finisher like a coticule and you will get a mirror polish even if the current finish is totally dull.

I've often wandered if coticule slury would work as a polish, never tried?

I have read that Japanese sword makers/restorers will collect slurry off extremely fine hones and use it to polish the swords.
