The start up can be higher but once you have it... it's doesn't wear out very fast Of course that doesn't take RAD, HAD, BAD or any other AD's into account

    First of all, welcome!

It sounds like you want the stone for touch ups? Any high grit stone will do, the Naniwa 12k, a Chinese 12k, the Shapton 16k or one of the high grit naturals, though these do tend to be a bit more expensive.

You can also pick up barber hones on eBay for very reasonable prices, and these make excellent touch up stones. They seem to vary a bit in grit size, but are generally around 10-12k.

Good luck and keep us posted!

If you got it from VB, it was shave ready. In fact, all of VB's str8 razors are made shave ready by the founder of SRP.

    Default thanks all

All good info. I know what to expect then because I do remember how it felt the first shave. OK new question: I've read that a 6/8 full hollow (what I have) had a bit of flex to the blade at the cutting edge. Would I be better off learning with say a 5/8, or maybe even 5/8 half hollow? I seem to be getting a poorer shave under the jaw...almost like the edge is already rolled by the time I get there.

I don't think your issue under the jaw is necessarily related to the grind of your razor. Many times the hair under the jaw and on the neck grows in different directions. That may be the reason your shave doesn't feel as close under the jaw. After gaining some experience, try shaving very carefully XTG or even ATG with your str8 razor on that region of your face.

    Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, the hair changes direction toward all points of the compass on the throat area...good thing nobody is watching while I shave that area...arms waving, head tilting, stretching, making faces, shaking

Kind of like the faces and movements that would happen if that 300 Shiggy heads to the floor?
