    Default Scale ID Help

I picked up this Clauss for a great price because of the cracked & broken scales from a flee market.

The Blade is in great condition with almost no wear and I intended to re scale this one. Once I got it home and cleaned it up further I really liked the weight and balance of the blade. The blade also fit tight in the scales.

So I put a red marker on the bevel and then on to a slurred coticule. (I like the Red, it is so much easier to see than Black). The marker came off in a couple of laps. So 15-20 laps more, then 10 or so more on water, 15-20 on a slurried Thüringen and 10-15 more with just water and a test shave.

Wow, this is a nice shaver.

So here’s my question. Are these original scales?

The carved pattern is on both sides and the vertical pattern is gouged out about a 1/16 of an inch deep between the vertical lines. I have seen this vertical gouge pattern on other Clauss razors with similar, but not this same pattern.

And second, is there an easy way to identify the scale material?

I like the pattern and am thinking of reproducing it on similar material on the new scales.

What a nice razor! Those are original scales and are hand carved bone. Too bad about the damage. Clauss razors are excellent shavers. I would have it rescaled in bone, if it were mine, but carved bone scales are pretty rare.
