    Default Question about Pumas.

So I have recently restored a Puma to what I call bad enough to shave with condition (no mirror no bells some pitting etc...) and boy did it shave, so naturally being infected with rad I saw something peculiar... none of the other razors I have seen say made with pumaster steel they usually say made with best puma steel or something like that. Anyway anyone have an inside scoop on which pumas are the better batches or did I just get lucky and have one that says pumaster steel ? Thanks!

It depends on the time period in which they were made. I have a few really old ones that are made with Kayser Ellison Steel, Pumamaster or Best Puma came later and I'm not sure of what order. I've not found a vintage Puma that wasn't a superlative shaver. Not to mention the Bresnick imported Puma ducks. Also superlative shavers IME.

Well 'pumaster' is obviously the tweener grade between 'pumer' and 'pumastest' steel, the later also known as the 'best puma steel'.

The bit about Kayser Ellison steel is interesting, cause I had a razor that was marked Kayser Ellison's Best Sheffield Silver Steel. She was a Burgham Registered blade. That razor was a great shaver, too.

I have a number of German razors with Kayser Ellison steel. Various manufacturers. Seems like that was a well thought of company back then.

Very cool, Jimmy! Thanks for sharing. I'd seen "Sheffield Steel" and "Silver Steel" and such, but I had no idea there was any manufacturer's steel that was referred to. There's a company that would be interesting to look into I bet.

I googled them a long time ago. There is a book or two on them and IIRC a forum where some people discuss living in the area of the company and working there.
