    Default Oh, Sweet Universe

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

Today The Universe gave me a smooch and lit up my fireworks like the Fourth of July. Later when a friend asked in passing how I was doing, I said I was beaming in the sunshine like a peach high in a tree. After all, it isn't everyday that I can hold a gift in my hand and thank good fortune for swimming in my lane.

Let me start from the beginning. Because of a heavy writing schedule and a string of self-imposed deadlines, including one for the second novel I must complete by year's end, I have had to change my daily workout schedule at the gym. Until two months ago I worked out in the morning and showered and shaved afterward at the gym. Now I shave at home early in the morning and work out at the gym early in the afternoon.

Today, I went to the gym reluctantly, since the sentences and the paragraphs were flowing, but I am glad I did. In the locker room, I ran into one of the regular guys who used to watch me shave with the straight razor and announce that if he tried anything like that, he would slice his face from ear to ear. A very nice guy, I might add, and an old radio listener of mine.

He asked if I still shaved with the straight razor. Of course, I said. He asked how many razor I had and I said 21. He then said he had a razor in his locker he wanted to show me. Oh dear, I thought, another rusty razor with a chipped blade. It wasn't it. No, it was anything but a razor meant for the junk pile. He asked what I thought of it.

Hardly able to contain myself, I took it out of the slightly faded but spotless coffin and, after carefully examining it, said it was in perfect shape. There was not even a water mark on it. Nothing. The blade, a spike, sparkled. The original scales, though a bit loose at the pivot, were just as perfect. "This is a fabulous razor," I said. "It's a famous name." He said he didn't know how long he'd had it, but it was never used. He said he could never see himself shaving with it.

I said I would love to buy it from him. "Nah," he said. "I'll give it to you." I didn't know what to say. "Listen," he added, "I've never paid you for all the years of entertaining me on the radio."

I would show you a picture of it, but the razor is already packed to be shipped to Lynn for honing.

Oh, by the way, the razor was in a J.A. Henckels Twin Works coffin. The markings on one side of the shank read Dubl Duck Special No. 1, and on the other Dubl Duck Pearlduck. And yes, two ducks on each side.

    How sweet The Universe.

    Regards,
    Obie

That is great Obie. A really nice friend you have there. IME dubl duck Specials are as good as any blade they made.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Excellent story, though it would be better if I were the protagonist. Maybe I should start going to the gym... Who am I kidding?

You are very lucky. I had a recent experience where I was given 4 razors and a barber hone all were stolen before the day was out I didn't even get a chance to see what they were.
