Thanked: 0Help with information on a razor!
A year or two ago I received a straight razor as a gift, but have no idea anything about it! I have tried using google to find more information but I am hopeless as I know nothing about straight razors! Someone please help me with information about the history of this razor and maybe even an guess at the value! Thanks!
the blade's front reads:
Gebr Lang
Goldene Medaillen
Solingen
on the back it reads:
51, 4/8 WIENER-SCHABERL
it has what seems to be a bone handle with a scrimshaw art design
The box does not seem to match the razor, at least from my inital research. It was given to me with a worn out Koller & Schmitz Cutlery Co. FOX razor box.
I know that This company existed from the late 1800s til about 1916, but the German blade doesnt match the box so i have no clue what I have!
Any help or any information at all would be great! Thanks!

Maybe a photo would help.. anyway, have you tried the razor database on this site???? maybe you can find it there to get more info about it; however, in the database section you won't find any pricing info as this is more related with it's actual condition, collectability, among other variables.....
Good luck!!!

It's made by a german company, but you already know that. May be somebody with a book can tell you when were they producing razors, but a lot of companies were in business for decades.
Gebr = brothers, but that's the extent of my german knowledge.
I would guess that the value is exactly 17 united states cents. Mostly because I like prime numbers.
Other than that you shouldn't expect an appraisal here.

Well the handle looks like it was scrimshawed recently if the picture with the artist signature and 2005 after it. Which means that the scales may be ivory since that was the medium preferred by most scrimshaw artist.

Thanked: 0agree
I agree. its a mismatched case and razor with a modern art design added. The way the three contrast each other makes me wonder more about the history and how they all came together into what i have now. im pretty clueless about straight razors, so any information is helpful!

The scales are bone , you can tell by the pores . Looks like a nice razor .

Weiner Schaber translates to Viennese scraper. It must refer to the size and style.

I forgot to attach this. It shows one which looks quite similar.
