Info Request - E L & Co
Recently got this razor stamped 'Made for the United States by E L & CS. I'm hoping some of our research guys can pull up some info on this one. It's a bigun weighing in at 3.8 oz. It would be interesting to know something about it so I can share the info w/ Jr.
This one may hit the shop on Saturday. Who was it that likes to hone wedges? LOL Can't wait to see Jr. face when I tell him it's the next one onthe honing block.Last edited by Joed; 06-16-2010 at 07:59 PM.

I have been trying to find some info on my E. L. & Co. too. But, like you, I haven't had any luck either. It sure looks and feels like a Sheffield blade, but there are no markings to prove that. I looked in the 1857 directory for Sheffield, and even though it lists over 75 razor manufacturers, I couldn't associate any with E.L. & Co. As a matter of fact there weren't even any razor makers with a last name beginning with "L". Since it doesn't show a country of origin on the blade, it was probably made prior to the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. Goins' Encyclopedia only lists the company's name with no further details. "The Standard Guide to Razors" mention an E&L Co. of Syracuse, NY, but that's probably not the same outfit. Don't you hate it when there are s-o-o-o-o many different razors out there and such a small amount of information available?

It's possible that E&L Co was the importer or US side of things, much like Jersey City Cutlery (or something like that...) was the US part of Wade & Butcher.
