Thread: clover brand

i was just wondering if, anyone knows any thing about numbers stamped on the inside of scales, namely off a 5/8ths W.H. Morely@sons clover brand razor, the stamp is 618 A. I'm thinking that it is just a part #, am i right? could it be used to i.d. the age of the razor?

Numbers stamped on razors generally referred to the model or style of the razor. Because of the lack of documentation from razor companies over the periods of their existence it is very difficult to find a chronological sequence of their styles, scales, model numbers, etc. There were so many companies that either made razors or sold razors made by others, and so little printed or preserved evidence of their existence that it makes dating most razors a very difficult and chancy undertaking. At best, most dates can only be guessed at determined by general style, scale material, or the manufacturer's known years of operation.

I think the numbers inside scales are likely something from the actual maker of the scales. With so many scales out there, and so many seeming to be common to several makers of razors, I can only guess that there were companies that made scales for razor manufacturers, and then they were paired up along the way.

So, best guess, something to do with the model of the scales themselves.
