Thread: What is the best possible razor?

As you have gathered, these questions have no answer in the abstract.
For me it often is the razor I just used for a great shave. But it is more than the razor.
Like the fly fisher that catches trout on a fly that they tied, there is great satisfaction in having a great shave with a razor you have honed.
The best razor in the world may shave like a butter knife if not honed well.
That said, everyone knows the best razor is the Chronic.

Janivar, thanks for your insight but these are not answers, they are definitions of best in context to the matter in question. The answer is the make and model. Please dont name what you think they are, because Im not interested - my mere point is that no one really knows what the best razor is, as no one has tried them all. Even if they had, they are not all created 100 percent equally. I have a 7 day set with favourites within...

Thanked: 603- Never needs to be honed
- Never needs to be stropped
- Never cuts or nicks your face
- Never rusts, pits, or tarnishes
- Scales never warp or crack
- Pins never loosen
- Always gives you a BBS shave
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

A free razor... Coincidentally, my favorite drink is also of the free variety.

[QUOTE=GaiusValeriusPulcher;612359]What is the best that ever did exist/does exist or what hypothetical razor would be the best? I'm most curious about material-wise what would be the highest quality handle and blade? Is there a maker that is the Salvatore Ferregamo of razors? [I was going to use a car analogy there but then thought that might start a different fight] Are there any special processes that the metal would have to go through for it to be considered the best?[/QUOTE
Boy i bet your glad you started this post, just buy a KAMA straight you will love it!!!!!!

Well, the best razor would be one that becomes transparent to the user. No voodoo required for its care, the microwave of razors. You just use it, it works wonderfully and provides a clean and comfortable shave to the user. No honing, no stropping, no thinking, it simply works.
Razors have been elevated to their current stature and decoration in just the past few years. At one point they were utilitarian items, an appliance used every day without a thought. Now we buff and polish them, put exotic scales on them, have the spines worked, which is nice. I like the looks of a good razor, but in the end, it is the shave that matters. Eye candy is pointless if it shaves like a hack saw. I have some fancy blades, a few one off customs, but in the end, all that matters is how well it shaves. I would take an old blade that shaves perfectly to a pretty blade that shaves ok.

Thanked: 0Very difficult to answer your question.
The best answer imo is whatever works best for you. There's no such thing as the best. You could buy a crappy blade and scale it in ivory with diamonds and it would still be crappy. Let's compare a pen with a semi-automatic gun. You could kill a person with either one depending on the situation. Expensive does not imply being "the best" but at the same time I will not suggest buying knock-offs. It's all about personal preference.
