Talking First Razor from the Classifieds

    Hello all,

I'm new around here. (Been lurking and reading a lot.) Started to use a straight razor about 2 months ago. Just wanted to say that I bought a razor from the classifieds and just received it today.
Man, I finally know what a scary sharp blade looks and feels like. Can't wait to shave with it.

Thanks to everybody for all the help and tutorials in the beginner's section. It has really helped in my progression.

    Matt

If you're new to this sport, it would be best if you did not feel the blade except when shaving with it. Occasionally beginners trash the edge while testing the edge.

Good luck with that first shave. Hopefully all that reading will pay off.

sup homey be careful with that razor and welcome.

Edit: Lots of good info here you won't find elsewhere. The minimum you'll need to keep it sharp will be a leather strop. I don't advise buying a hone YET unless you've honed before. Trial and error is your best friend.

I wouldn't advise it for at least 6-12 months.... unless he has honed razors before. Knives, chisels, planes, etc are very, very different creatures from razors.

Thanks for the advice. I have numerous hones. I have sharped my everyday carry knives and kitchen knives for years. Mostly Arkansas (black, surgical) My father has some stones that he bought in early 40's that he lets me use.

Let's just say that I found out the hard way that sharpening a straight is waaaaaay different than sharpening anything else.

My background of sharpening Japanese kitchen knives was helpfull but not quite in the same ball park, razors are on the same hemesphere but oposite sides than kitchen knives (not to mention western kitchen knives are in another galixy).

I suggest you get a good blade to learn honing on before messing with your shave ready ones. That way you know where your skill are advancing and where they need work while still being able to shave

Welcome to SRP Matt! You're off to a good start with your studies and a pre honed razor. Good advice noted above. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress and first shave with the new blade.
