Thanked: 0Wade and Butcher info?
Hey gents,
Long-time lurker, first time poster. After perfecting the fine art of nicking my strop and myself on a Gold Dollar razor, I decided I was finally ready to move on. I picked up a Wade & Butcher for $45 from Howard over at the Perfect Edge.
The razor reads "Wade & Butcher, Sheffield" with an encircled B followed by an arrow (as in the type that's shot with a bow) pointing towards a German cross.
I'm just entering the world of vintage razors, and sure am curious. I know nothing about this razor. Any guesses how old it is? What might the arrow & cross mean? What's the handle made out of? (hopefully the pics come out) Should antiques be treated or stored any differently? Thanks for any advice!

The arrow and cross is one of their logos, I'd say the one that was most widely used and certainly the most recognized. For the age of that razor, I'd guess it's 1880's or so. I can't quite tell from the photos, but the handle looks like black horn to me. All razors need the same care (for the most part) - keep her dry when not in use; if it's humid, coating the blade in oil will be helpful.

Welcome to SRP Toby! Holli is correct in his info. Since the razor stamp is Sheffield and England is not stamped it is prior to 1891 and probably horn scales. Now that you are into vintage razors you will be hunting them down w/o mercy. Enjoy your new RAD.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
