I wouldn't be surprised if they're original.
I have a different model c-mon which I bought sealed in the original packaging from the factory, and it has the same generic scales that the dubl duck special and dwarf have.

Thanked: 603Ahhh... the perfect example! See the difference? Of course you do! The former is a work of art, the latter is not.
To paraphrase what someone else said (with regard to the Blackie-as-blade), the modern C-MON "Cadillac" is a good blade, while the original is a razor (and which is why the former goes for $69.95 at any barber supply house, while the latter will fetch over $200 on ebaY).

You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

Thanked: 603Sure... this one recently went for $22.05 on eBay (July 7th). Know why? The scales.
Same for Otto Deutsch "Hans" razors: With original scales, $150 and more (we've all seen 'em go for over $300) -- without original scales, $25.
That's why people buy 'em... it's a package deal. And that's why people pay the various members here on SRP to rescale otherwise good/great blades in gorgeous woods, acrylics, etc., rather than slapping-on a pair of "generic" scales.
Please. You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.

The differences you cite in your first and second posts are entirely different. With the Caddy's, the blades are different and totally different quality.
As for your second post - I won't dispute that collectors pay more for the original scales, my point is I think that is silly. I care about the blades, and so long as the scales look ok and are functional, I could not care less. That is how I feel about it.
As for analyzing why certain razors bring certain prices on ebay - it can't be done. There are so many factors, like the lister's rep, the quality of the pictures, when it ends, who's watching it, if people forget to bid (like I did on that Blackie you linked), etc etc. Sure, the scales are one factor, for some people, but not the only factor and not for everyone.

07-18-2010, 01:35 PM #18You're still making the erroneous assumption that plain scales are not original. They are.

I've got a C-Mon Blackie (tang is stamped Peter J Michaels / Ellicotville NY) that has definitely never been honed, has perfect factory bluing, and generally appears as new. It has a pair of very plain white scales, and although I can't swear they're original, it seems odd that someone would buy a Blackie and rescale it without so much as sharpening the edge.
I don't know that I'm yet able to post pictures, but I can email a photo if it would help resolve this question.

PJM is a Barber supply company. It only makes sense that some Barbers would want a razor that shaved great and w/o the bling while others didn't mind paying extra for the flashy scales. If you search around you will find other razors from PJM w/o the bling. I have two Blackies in plain scales. One may have been a rescale and the other looks original.
