    Just had another thought I can share...
    SHellac, should stay on long term no problem and is easily removed with meth or alcohol...

    I would keep them out where I can see them to be sure they are OK. Otherwise I would go with one or some combination of Reniassance Wax,
    TufGlide and Cosmoline.

    Rennaissance Wax cannot be topped for this sort of thing, IME. I haven't kept anything coated in it for 15 years, but it does form a very hard, impervious seal. Much more reliable, safer, cleaner, low maintenance than grease or oil.
