    Exclamation Razor wont close?

After todays shave i tried to close the razor but when i put it back into the scales it just pops back out and stays semi open.

Has this ever happend to anyone before?

The only thing i did different for todays shave was use hot water to rinse the blade at the end of the shave instead of cold.

Also the scales are bone if this helps too.

Did i just screw up my razor??

That's weird. Perhaps a small piece of the scale has broken off and is lodged in the pivot. I don't think its fatal to you or your razor, though.

Perhaps another SRP member who does restorations will be able to offer some advice to correct the problem.

A picture is worth a thousand words. What is the brand .... not that is makes a difference. I would open it and look inside and begin closing it while eyeballing it.

I have one that does that, but it's odd that a razor that used to close now won't. The one I have was restored, and it has never closed properly since.

I wonder if maybe the hot water did something to the scales at the pivot; if they expanded it would change the pressure on the tang and could prevent it from staying closed. Let it sit open and check again later - that would be my advice.

i panicked for nothing, after the shave the hot water must have expanded the metal.

i wrote the post right away when it wouldnt close but as i left it out as i did my after shave ritual i guess it cooled and un expanded.

It weird to to have seen that because i have never read that ever happening

I'm going to take a guess that the pivot pin is tight and the pivot hole binds at that point in the equation. I wonder if working it back and forth many times would wear it or possibly turn the pivot pin enough to change the situation ?

    Jimmy could be right.

My theory was to do with the way the tang tapers and the scales bow to create friction on the pivot. If overtightened, sometimes those factors combine to force the blade open a bit - only maybe 5 degrees or so. Expansion (I would guess of the scales, but I suppose it could also be the metal) would increase the tension and make the popping open more likely. Since pivots loosen a bit on their own (and the bone may wear a bit), this should go away in the future. Or if you do a final rinse under cold water or avoid getting hot water on the pivot, you may never have the issue again.

i rinsed the blade in cold water and it helped it close better... i think i did get some hot water around the pin and it might have caused it to expand.

I will for sure be way more careful next time!

I do not think you can get hot enough water from your tap to expand enough to cause problems, but I might be wrong here.

TI uses straight spacers instead of wedges, which puts stress on the scales , could be you have deformation from that which causes the tang to not fit between the scales any more.
