Wife's DE Blade Life Expectancy?
So my wife's new DE arrived in the mail today along with my new straight.
I ordered her 5 packs of the Derby blades to go along with it.
Her question is, how often should she change the blades? What is the life expectancy of a blade (ballpark figure is good)?
Again, thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

I think that 5 packs of de razor blades should last her quite a while--each blade should provide 5-7 shaves at a minimum, perhaps a bit more. Hypothesizing that she won't be shaving everyday, that means that those five packs of blades should last her many, many months.

Depends on how her hair is, I get 3-4 shaves out of one blade.

Thanked: 14Since the usual DE blade lasts 5-7 shaves I would suggest a blade used for leg shaving would probably last less - even with one pass a leg has a lot more surface area to cover. That is assuming that it is the hair that is dulling the blade - if it is a combo of the shave and corrosion of the surface area exacerbated per shave there may be little effect on the number of useable shaves when shaving a leg (or two).
Once she figures out what a good shave feels like she will quickly realize when the blade is dull (like the rest of us as we started wetshaving).
Bottom line, my money is on less shaves than if the blade were only used for the face - just a guess.

Thanked: 1I have been using a straight for months but when I use a DE, I also use the Derby blades.
I use them for 3 shaves each - they are nice and sharp, I find, for that length of time. With the blades being inexpensive, I stick with that strategy. I have gotten 5 shaves out of them at first but notice dulling after the 3rd shave. Again, they are inexpensive and 3 shaves are at maximum comfort - I recommend that...

i keep toying with this "how long do i use a blade" thing too.. and some DE blades last 4 shaves for me and some have only lasted one.. i guess what it comes down to is this..
change the blade when it stops cutting... or better yet.. starts pulling.

Thanked: 9Your wife will soon be able to tell when the blade gets dull, from the pulling and not so close shave, i usually change mine after 3 shaves, sometimes 4, plus had been said earlier, 2 legs are a bigger area to shave than a face.

I'd say switch after 3-4 shaves if the shave includes the legs. (I sometimes shave my legs when I go cycling lmao..DON'T JUDGE ME!) If it doesn't include legs everytime then change the blade once a week, to avoid nicks or pulling.
