    have to say i'm surprised at how many of you are ok with my trying to clean up antique razors. any tips/tricks/materials y'all could lead me on to?

    welcome to srp.

    take a look at the workshop section, as well as the restoration articles in the wiki. that'll probably be the best way to get an idea what's involved.

    Why? You are an adult of legal age...right? As long as you promise not to come back about losing a finger...lol.

    In all seriousness, I see it like this. If you're doing scales, there's no way to bung up the razor. If you're polishing the blade out with metal polish, there's still a high unlikelyhood that you'll booger it up. If it requires a full scale blade restoration and you screw it up then that's alright because likely the blade was hosed in the first place.

    I think that what some folks cringe over is when someone takes a beautiful gilded razor and uses metal polish and 'accidentally' strips all the gold off the razor. I think that common sense and asking questions along the way go along way in completing a restoration. Also knowing when to stop and realize that you're about to go over your own head is very important too. You seem like the type that already have a bit of knowledge of the world and how things work so I'm really preaching to the choir here.
