    Default RAZOR FUNCTION HELP!

What in tarnation is this?? Anyone know what the purpose of the extra metal around the blade is for? Strangely there's a dangerous appeal to this razor that lures me.

It's an early safety razor,The extra metal is a guard that was supposed to help keep the blade at the correct angle and keep you from cutting yourself. Nice find!

I would love to see it demonstrated. Still trying to figure out how one would use this contraption.

Default A short course on the Curley

You use this razor just like a normal straight except that the guard is used to prevent the user from making the angle of the blade too high which would result in a nick or cut. The guard can be positioned on either side of the blade to allow for use with either hand.

When using the razor the blade is kept against the face and the guard is kept to the outside.

The end of the tang (monkey tail) pivots on the the pin. Holding the blade carefully in one hand pivot the endmost part of the tang upwards. The part of the assembly nearest the heel will then rotate downward. This is the locking mechanism that holds the guard in place. When the guard is unlocked it can then be rotated to the other side of the razor. When it is rotated directly upward it can be slid forward and off of the razor. The razor then can be honed or stropped like an ordinary straight razor (similar to a frameback). Or, it can be used without the guard like a regular frameback razor

    Regards - Walt
