Master Piece
Good evening all,
Up in KCK for Amy's birthday and the Ren Fair. Today was a shopping day and one of the places we hit on a whim was a Antique store that was huge!!!! Took about 3 hours to go through it all.
I saw a few razors and took a couple pics that are coming as I forgot the camera and used the cell. Need the chip adapter at home.
I decided to pick up a $25 one figuring even if it was a piece of trash I could study it. It is a Mastepiece made by Maher& Grosh. A couple questions on it. Besides risking my face how do you tell some thing is shave ready? I can see fresh marks where someone sharpened it. Is this a blade worth even sending to Lynn & Don?
Thanks,
Jim

Thanked: 21Run it up your arm hair or leg hair not touching your skin, if it pops hairs off in the middle it might be shave ready
if you just picked it up at a shop I'd guess it's not shave ready

I hope if someone sharpened it they actually shaved with it & knew how to hone otherwise it could be a lot of work to restore the edge.

Maher& Grosh made good razors way back when. If it is in good shape it ought to be worth having honed. Post a pic of both sides with the blade showing and we can better tell if it is worth sending out.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Cool. Like I said I'm not looking to have gotten a hidden gem but it would be nice if it could be used as more than a pattern.
I'll get the pics up tomorrow or Tuesday when I get home.
The condition is good. Nice polish, no chips in the handle, no rust or pitting. Since there are some stains from what looks like cleaning up the blade and the handle is very modern (and cheap) golden MOP celluloid I would guess that this has been through some restoration.

Here's the pics
Sorry it took a while.
I don't have a lot of knowledge of straights but from a knife perspective it looks like it's in good condition.
Thx,
Jim

That razor looks in very good condition, Congrats! I'm no expert but it looks like it would be a perfect razor to send out and be honed. It doesn't look like it has a frown or uneven hone wear so it should hone up very nice. I would wait until Glen, Jimmy or one of the other top level dudes to chime in before sending it out, as they are the experts! Very nice razor though.

From the pics it seems you potentially have a good 'un

looks good to me.
of course with any razor you'll know for sure only once it's honed.
plus if you're sending it for honing somebody else is risking their face first

The Maher & Grosch brand are well known and that is a fine example of one, get it honed up and smile....
