Firodur
So are the new ones still a good razor and are they made the same was as the NOS. How do they compare to the NOS.
So will this be a good shave razor is what I want to know or are the new ones junk.

Bnick, I have been shaving with a Friodur for almost a year now, believe me, they are excellent razors. Matter of fact, I own the 7/8 and the 8/8 Friodur...both outstanding razors. The only thing though, is that they are INOX and are a PITA to hone, the steel is hard as compared to my DOVO Best Quality, overall I highly recommend this razor. HOG

I think I have only shaved with the new grind ones. They are really nice shavers. Some have said that the actual NOS ones are a little bit smoother - probably due to a better grind. But the new ones are by no means junk; I really like them and have one in my "rotation."
Also, the scales on the new grind ones are put on by whoever finishes the razor, or maybe even by someone after that, so they vary in quality. I have seen some of the ebay ones that had rather rough pinning, some in wood that looked really terrible, and others that are great. Seems something of a crap shoot. The one I have was finished (scales and filework on the spine) by Robert Williams (at least that is what both Lynn and Don guessed when I showed it to them), and the fit and finish is top quality.

Nothing against the seller, but I've never seen one that IS NOT referred to as NOS, regardless of new vs old grind, new vs old scales, etc. I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much, anyway; they are all at least very good shavers, and the difference between the old grinds and new are pretty minor.

Thanked: 84Bnick,
Great story! It is great when the people we love support us in what we do, even though they might not understand it.
My wife similarly got me a Mappin Lancet razor for my birthday, even though she's quite sure I'm a little 'off' using such a thing.
And just think, someday you might get to pass it on as well.
Enjoy,
Ed

I don't see it. Point is, the guy has a nice Grandmother, and a nice razor on the way. I wish him the best with both. If I think I need proofreading/editing I guess I know where to go.

Iz6, chill out. I got what Ed was saying. Sorry you missed it. You've been warned. Play nice.
Very nice story to the OP. Give Grandma a big hug. I have several Friodurs, one NOS that came in crappy non Henckels scales and a bunch of vintage Frodurs. Each and every one shaves GREAT. With that settled you need to ask yourself which you would be happiest with. If you g with the NOS I would suggest the Shaving Shop as the source. If you want vintage EBay is just about the only place to find one unless you spot one in the classifieds and act quick. You're in for a great razor and great shaves once properly honed. Good luck.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

that's very nice of your grandmother.
the ebay seller knifecorner sometimes has them in stock and sells them around $100.
they're nice razors, but at the end of the day the large friodur i've kept is the one made entirely by henckels in the old days.
it has original henckels scales with the friodur inlay on them and the spine is thicker.
most of these newer ones that i've seen (I think 6-7 of them altogether) have had grind and finish issues, only one was really good from aesthetics point of view. and definitely need to be honed.
