Default What type of blade are they?

I was curious on what the blades are called that have no scales or anything... They look almost like a fixed blade knife...

I have seen some in the SOTD posts and such and really like them and also would like to look into purchasing one.

Are you talking about the Japanese razors? Longish thin handle and a shorter blade? There are a bunch of guys that make them; two of the better known names are Tosuke and Iwasaki. Straightrazordesigns carries Iwasaki's.

    Yes and no....

Same style design with long handle and short blade but those look cheap to me... There was one on here I fell in love with that was on a SOTD post or in the show and tell area...

I will try and find it I guess.

Are they too just called a straight razor or is there a special name that sets them apart from the others?

It would be helpful if you could link to one, cause I'm not sure what you are referring to.

From the description giving and "not Japanese" in nature... I'd be guessing OP is referring to a custom build of a folding straight razor into a fixed blade.

I have one that has been converted into a fixed. The blade was shortened to just over 2" due to damage. It shaves wonderfully.

As with any other straight razor... it's *ALL* in the technique.... and fixed blade straights are much less forgiving on hand position on the tang/handle...

Baldy, the one you made is really neat, if I damage mine, I will be sure to give you a call!

And then the purist one you posted is almost EXACTLY like what I am thinking/wanting...

To me, they look like they were made by an old school blacksmith back in the day and simply look amazing, I really like how thick the whole thing is, just looks mean.
