Depends a little on how you straightened out the frown. If by breadknifing with the blade perpendicular to the hone, then yes it is normal. How did you do it?

It's certainly going to take longer than normal. I've never used more than one layer of tape (and then only once to protect a decorated spine) so I'm not really sure if that would make a difference . Sorry I can't be of more help.

Can you post a pic? What grind is the blade (full hollow, wedge, etc). I had a similar problem with a full hollow and the stabilizer (thick metal part by the heel) was my problem and needed to be modified.

Yes, it will take a while to get the edge back. When removing a frown by bread knifing or any angle other than with the spine down on the hone you are honing the bevel from the back of the bevel to the edge. The edge will not show any signs of sharpening until the bevel reaches the edge again while honing with the spine on the hone. Be patient and keep going. It may go a bit faster if you use the DMT 325 or ssomething between the 325 and the 1k till the bevel meets the edge again.

Are you doing circles on the 1k? I find that instead of a straight (or X) if I do lil circles down the stone on each side (of the blade) it will put an edge on preety quickly....
