Default What have I gotten myself into...

So here I am, finally using some hard earned cash to purchase myself a new razor from a trusted ebay vendor. And would you know it, I have absolutely no idea what brand it is or how it even shaves like yet. Does anyone have any info about this razor at all, my extensive googling showed no results.

    J. Askham Broadlane 13/16 Straight Razor

Any help with identification or just general discussion about this find would be really appreciated.

I should add that I have already purchased it and it is on its way to me so this thread doesn't disappear to the nether realms of the auction board.

    Thanks.

Goins shows John Askham 1856-1864, and used trademark J. Sharpe
They also show without the H, John Askam 1818-1860

I don't know anything about the maker, but I've never come across a vintage Sheffield blade that I didn't love. (Except those Reynolds....)

That grind on the front is also pretty unique. Is that on the back as well?

Yes, this is the main reason for the purchase. I really like its uniqueness, but I am afraid it is a really obscure razor. The grind is like that on both sides, maybe to let the blood and soap drip away cleanly like the old medieval swords.

I have a W&B Diamond Edge with the same grooves and the same writing in the front groove.

Nice razor. This is very interesting. I wonder what link there is between the two apart from both being Sheffield razors?

Looks worth restoring to its former glory. It would be a cool razor to have in the que.

That blade is special...I don't normally have a straight razor take my breath away, not even a custom but your blade did take my breath away.
