Friodur on Carbon Steel
Has anyone heard of the Henckels Friodur process being used on Carbon steel, or is it just used for Stainless steel?
Thanks

Thanked: 995If you mean using very low temperatures during the heat treatment process, yes.
To be succinct, there are any number of folks involved making blades who believe this to be a helpful process. There are questions about the validity of some of those claims that have not been answered properly. All the rest is simply belief.
For the most part, unless the carbon steel (low alloy) is heat treated incorrectly in the first place, using cryo is unnecessary. It is metallurgically helpful with high alloy steels (stain resistant or complex alloys) changing retained austenite to martensite.
It adds expense to completing the process that may not be necessary for carbon steels. That folks choose to use this process is simply their decision and it is up to them to explain their reasons. Then it's up to the customer to decide if it's something better.Last edited by Mike Blue; 10-11-2010 at 12:27 PM.

Thanks Mike Blue
Thanks a lot for the insight, yes the cryo process is what I mean.
What I really also want to know is if all of the "Friodur" branded Henckels razors are all only made from Stainless steel, or are some made from Carbon steel.
It seems that a lot of guys post about the Friodur Henckels being stainless steel, but does anyone know if there are just as many Henckels Carbon Friodur razors?

I am under the impression that all Friodurs are stainless. But I could be wrong.

Thanked: 995Henckels is a big enough company that if they thought the process was worth doing, it would not be prohibitive to their economic margins. Everything I can find talks about high carbon stainless or high carbon no-stain kinds of material.

Thanked: 13249I can only think of one Carbon steel razor that has a Cyro Dropped, Frozen Temper Yada Yada Yada special steel...
It is pretty well known as a shaver too....
Dubl Duck Wonderedge
There are others that have some cold temper, frozen temper, ice temper advertising out there too...
Shumate Tonso
One of the Hess razors besides the #44 and #42 IIRC
I want to say one of the Robeson razor had that advertised too..
Whether any of this is really true is anyone's guess
AFAIK Friodur just means Frozen Temper processed, I am trying to think of any that I have seen that don't say Inox on them too..
I have one that has Friodur on the scales, but not stamped on the tang, I think they are originals, but you can't ever be 100% sure, it is not stamped Inox...
