Default When it only says "Sheffield"

I recall reading that sometime in the 1880's, England passed a law which required the maker's mark to read "made in England" in addition to the city. So if a blade only reads "Sheffield" then it was made prior to the law. Does anyone know what the exact year was?

Are you referring to the Madrid Accord? Maybe that was something different. It said that, as of I think 1895, goods had to state their country of origin.

I don't think there is any way to know the exact year something was made given such a common stamp. Even the range may be rather large. I'm thinking Sheffield would be at least 1840's to 1895.

Yes, it was the Madrid Trade accords of 1891. You can read more from Manah here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/razor...m-today-2.html. If you ever have any questions about old razors, especially Sheffield makers, ask him.

That's the one! Knowing that a blade dates prior to 1885 is enough for me.

England and several other nations passed their own import laws (which required incoming goods to be stamped with country of origin) prior to the madrid accords in 1891.

Razors being sold to markets not constrained by these laws were not subject to that constraint

That makes lots of sense IME. What's your source? Out of interest.

I don't remember - not because I'm too young but because it was a year or so ago when I was digging around online. Either the mckinley tariff act (just prior to madrid) or the one preceeding it required country of origin stamps for US imports, and england passed a trademark law governing country of origin for imported brands seeking trademark protection - i believe that was 1875 or 1883

If all it has is "Sheffield" you at least ought to post pictures and your story in the NEWLY FOUNDED "Orphanage" Razor Club. The club for razors with uncertain ancestry but outstanding shavicity.

Which needs a bump, if only for the word, "shavicity". Well done that man.

No no no.... It has the maker's name and then says Sheffield, not Sheffield, England.

I do have one that only says Shaw, so that one is a bit of a mystery.
