Default Newb and my first purchase

    Hello,

I've been reading through various articles on the sight for a while now and periodically checking local pawn and antique shops for old razors.

I finally found a razor and purchased it. I of course know nothing about razors but it wasn't expensive and it didn't look like it was in terrible condition.

The only markings on the razor itself are on the blade and the scales, both of which have "QUEEN" written on them.

The box is very beat up and someone had wrapped tape around one end so it took a bit of work to finally make out the printing.

It appears it is a Henry Sears & Son, 1865. (hopefully I have these terms right) The tang/shank were sandwiched between what appears to be thin layers of pearlescent shell, although some of it is missing from both sides.

I'm still learning the terms to describe razors so I can't tell much more about it. Rust on the tang but very little surface rust on the blade itself, no nicks or chips in the edge.

Overall I'm happy with my find, if nothing else simply for the novelty of it.

I do think it's funny that the end cap for the box is stamped, "Price $3".

    Cheers,
    Neudle

sound like you found a razor with covered tang possibly mother of pearl
If you tell us your location maybe you can find some help restoring it to a shaver
Or you can send it out to one of the good guys in the classifieds

Either way you need it professionally honed before use

You will also need a strop, brush and shaving soap/creme if you dont have that already

I haven't tried to use a straight razor in about 20 years, I have no intentions of trying to use this razor.

At some point I will buy a razor that is properly prepared, as well as all the other necessary items.

Eventually I'd like to see this razor repaired and ready to use, but I'm not in a hurry for that.

Welcome to SRP. If you have the wherewithal to post a photo of the blade we can tell you if it is in good enough condition to warrant the cost of honing and perhaps restoration if that is the direction you want to go. If the scales are solid honing is all that is necessary. Check out the SRP Wiki beginner's guide and make sure to peruse 'razors to avoid'.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
