Sorry for a basic question, but Im a total %100 newbie to straight shaving and Im not sure. I dont know much about straight razors but saw this one in a local store so I figured Id pick it up. The big deal is it came with the hone so I said heck why not. If any extra pics are needed please tell me and I will post them asap. Thanks for any help.

The razor is made in Germany, so it should be a good one.
I have the same hone (with box). It is one of the better quality barber hones. Nice catch. It may or may not need lapping; the edges look chamfered already.

Thanked: 13246Honestly I hate these oversized pics
But as already stated it is made in Germany, these are often called "Hardware Brands" as they were made for various Hardware stores across America, some have quite a following "Shapleigh" "Sears"
Think about these much as same as we see today with National brands packaging things for hardware chains ... ie: 3M tape and filters re-packaged as ACE brands....
Looks like a nice razor and should be a good shaver,,, nice snag on it and the hone..

Thanked: 3795I'm not certain of the size, but I would guess that is the Carborundum 102. It's a very good one.

Thanked: 0Sorry for the huge pics, but I'm still learning how to post them up.
As for the razor, I got the made in Germany and I figured it was prob a hardware store type chain, but how do you tell the full ground etc? Also is there anyway to tell what it's worth?
For the hone, I have been sharpening knives all my life but don't know exactly how to sharpen a razor. Any tips or tricks on how to do it? If this is just a cheap razor not worth anything then I will practice on it. If the posted razor should be cherished because it's rare then I will leave it alone or have it sharpened by a pro.
Thanks for the help,
Sean

Try using the hone that you have, the directions are with the hone, you may use more strokes than suggested, you cant really screw it up with a barbers hone. The blade looks to be in good condition and with proper edge restoration and upkeep it should serve you well for years.

Thanked: 3795I don't consider the razor to be rare, though I'm not aware of any significance of that particular hardware store. Regarding razor honing, read the Wiki or the sticky at the top of the honing section. After you read that, then go ahead and ask if you have any questions. You can also learn a lot simply by reading through old posts.
