    Default classifieds REX razors

(@mods: if this topic is in the wrong category please move it)

In the classifieds is an ad for unhoned new old REX 42 razors(66 in stock apparently). The razor is advertised as not shave ready. And as a newbie(I've got 1 shave ready razor and 3 razors I'm slowly restoring) I want to either:

    - Buy one or two and wait for my honing skills to come
    - Buy 2, get 1 professionally honed and try the other myself

Mind you that I only have a barbers hone I haven't used on my shaving razors, only on test razors to try my honing skills.

    So I've got 3 questions:

    1. Would it make a good shaver(it's Swedish so I think so)
    2. How much honing would the razor require(i.e. how well set is the factory edge)?
    3. Would this be a good deal or would I be wasting money?

    Cheers,

    BrickBag

Having two myself, I can confirm they are good shavers.

They will definitely require quite some honing. I must admit that when I bought two off ebay last year, they were two of the first razors I honed so I assume that it would go a lot faster nowadays with some more experience. I don't those barber hones you're talking about so I wouldn't know how good/easy to use they are.

Given that worldwide shipping is included I think you will pay about as much as I paid for them on ebay.

    Have fun!

I made a mistake - the price is 66 dollars, not the quantity available - I have only 2 for sale.

As to your questions, it would be biased for me to say whether it was good value for money and more importantly we are not allowed to offer valuations at SRP.

It is a brand new old stock razor for 66 dollars. A little cheaper than several other new razors on the market currently.

They are superb shavers once honed. The factory edge is fair, but I would take it to around 3K or 4K for 20 strokes, then 8K for 20 strokes and onto a finisher. The same process I hone any new old stock razor. That's me, others may take it straight to a finisher.

They are fine razors and you need more than a barber hone to go from bevel set to shave ready

Yep, I agree with Scipio and Ben on this one. They're good razors and will be great shavers once honed, but you'll need more than a barber hone to get them shave ready.

In terms of the price, thats really a call for you to make!

I agree that they are excellent razors - I have had a fair number of them and they take an excellent edge once honed properly.

    1. Great shaving razor as Neil said, you will not regret the purchase...see mine in my rotation
    2. I honed mine on: 1,4,8,16,Charnley Forrest (barber hones are just for touching up a razor you have been shaving with that was properly honed)
    3. This question is an opinion thing, but it's a good shaver once it's properly honed

As everyone has said great blades I had mine honed for me so I cannot speak on if they are easy or hard to hone but mine holds a fantastic edge and gives a great shave. I was a little disappointed in the scales, mine are simple off white thin plastic that is more springy than I would like but you don't shave with the scales and to me the shave it provides is as good as razors twice the cost.
