Thanked: 1QUICK! Is this a good straight razor for a beginner?
Hi,
Just found this on Ebay.de:
Rasiermesser J.A.HELLBERG ESKILSTUNA SWEDEN 42 bei eBay.de: Frisör Barbier (endet 15.11.10 19:47:15 MEZ)
It will end in 1 hour
I Read some good things about Swedish razors.
Is this a good knive to restore and then use?
I am able to shave with both a shavette and a safety razor.
Are the scales wood?
thanks in advance,
Matthijs

Hellbergs are very nice razors, but that is a smaller razor than I would typically recommend for a new guy. Also, small, quarter hollows with hard steel are, IMO, some of the more time consuming/difficult razors to hone, so if you to buy her I would highly recommend sending her out for honing.
Scales definitely look synthetic.

It is still out, that razor, now on a buy-it-now. I've got 2 of that exact razor. Holli4pirating is correct, the blade is 4/8 and a little on the narrow side perhaps for beginners. Also it has an french point, those can be a bit harder to learn than the round ones. As a matter of fact, I just honed up one of these and shave tested it very early yesterday morning - the point kept trying to bite me
Scales - I have one in white celluloid and one black in some sort of plastic, perhaps also celluloid but I am not sure.
I do like those razors tho.
