    Cool Nov expenditure

This month I spent $118 on a yellow coticule...and Christmas is just around the coner, so it would be another razor that will be added to the herd.

    About $120; Wish't I were rich!
Two 40mmx195mm Coticules, two slurry stones, six decent straights, a few old brushes, six old mugs/scuttles, about fifteen decent, little cleaning required, Gillette/EverReady/Gem, two good strops, assorted vintage blades/packs, and a few old soaps for trade. Month is not yet over.
And.. yes I am retired on antisocial insecurity, living alone!

    Hey Ron,

Just a note regarding my own experience.

You do yourself a great disservice if you think buying a more inexpensive razor off the classifieds as being inferior to new manufacture. The guys doing restoration take tremendous pride in their work, and it shows in the quality of the stuff they sell.

Most my shavers fall into the $40-$60 range of restored vintage razors from the classifieds. I do buy some that are more expensive, but these I plan to put into a display rather than shave with them (whenever I mention this the reply I ALWAYS get is, "NO, no! You HAVE to shave with it!" Lol! Well, maybe...).

I've even had a few that I bought for around $50 and they looked so nice that I wanted to put them on display! (They may not cost that much, but DAMN they're pretty!).

My favorite shaver right now is a Wade & Butcher near wedge that I bought from HNSB for $40. It shaves GREAT! As I'm gravitating toward near wedges, I bought 2 more this weekend from Sham for a total of $110 (average price of $55 each). That's 3 shavers for a total cost of $150.

That's the nice thing about ordering off the classifieds--you can order different steels, grinds, etc., for a low cost and find out what you like best. If you dump a lot of money into one razor, then you have one, and will never know if a different grind, steel, etc., is more friendly to your face; as well as whether of not a different kind of razor would be easier to handle and shave with.

I don't mean to discourage you from buying an expensive razor that you have your heart set on! Buy whatever is going to make you happy! But, don't assume that because it's a new manufacture it's somehow better. The first razor I bought was a Dovo "Best Quality" for $85 that had a warped blade. It's JUNK!! Period, end of story!

Just because a restored vintage razor is inexpensive, that doesn't mean that it's somehow it's cheap, inferior, etc., to a current manufactured one that's more expensive.

And, if a razor offered for sale on the classifieds has any issues, typically it's pointed out in the ad.

Moreover, a lot of guys selling on the classifieds give a money back guarantee. If you don't like it, send it back. (Stimpy52 always offers you a refund, plus $5 if he's misrepresented the razor! How can you beat that???).

Well, I can see I've posted another essay. (Sorry to the board on the thread drift).

Metal, fasteners, bearings, wheels, motor, belts, etc....$1100 (roughly)

Making your own razors....I'm not sure yet. Gonna have to ruin some perfectly good steel first

Oh, and I sent a Thistle to Glen to get fitted with a new pair of shoes.

I been a bad, bad boy this month. Thankfully my beautiful girlfriend is not a SWMBO yet...

I haven't kept track, there's some new old straights, a coticule, various after shaves, soaps. Couple hundred for sure. I probably have averaged 200 monthly since I started straight razor shaving, which was going to be cheaper than cartridges and a spray can of Barbasol...yeah right.
