RAREIST IN THE LAND
What would be considered one of the rarest razors to find? I know this is sort of an offbeat question but is there a Holy Grail of straights?
I know that Ive been looking for another Gottlieb Hammesfahr and have had no luck at all,not even any information except the basics,so whats the hardest to find??

Thanked: 1195The rarest razor is relative to the one doing the collecting.
For me it is a Mappin & Webb. Always wanted one, but someone always snipes them right at the last second. I've lost more than one that way

Thanked: 14hmmm. well that would depend. If the razor that the iron duke shaved with, or even say that wee corsican ogre ever appeared for sale, id put up a good amount for that. (imbibed as those razors surely are with greatness, witing to be transferred to my persons through there mere use)... or maybe that of Cato the Younger (if it still exists) but i digress.... as i assume you meant production razor in which case i can offer nothing.

Rarest that I know of is the DD Napoleon. No one seems to have ever seen one.
But that doesn't necessairly mean it's the razor everyone is looking for.

I've just now started to become aware of what I'm really after. As such the names I've been looking for are still pouring in.
I reciently stopped deluding myself that I'm not going to collect razors... RIGHT... A collect-aholic isn't going to collect something they are interested in... Ya so after 4 years in this I have decided that I'm going after the old stuff, and that requires me to find some more books that I can't seem to get my hands on (figures)... Anyways My focus will be on as many of the heavy bladed straights of various names as I can find. From that I'm sure other nitch runs will surface.
So what names are rare and what razors would be scarce??? POST away please, inquiring minds NEED to know Please if you have names and such could you supply dates as well

See, you want rare, but not too rare. I'm sure there are plenty of small makers like that piper exeter that I had a several of. The problem is that when you go back that long ago very often they're lousy shavers. Of course if you want them for decoration only it doesn't matter. Also as you know the big heavy blades are not that old, comparatively speaking of course.
Here's a name of a big and mean one - sutcliffe, or something similar. Ask Lee for a picture.

I guess when we talk about razors, old is relitive
Sutcliffe huh?? WOW, saw that one very nice, saw one not long ago... have to recheck that...
I guess by larger I'm also refering to "Not Hollow Ground" but thats me being a bit term mixed up (ish). I really hate dyslexia at times...Last edited by DwarvenChef; 12-14-2010 at 10:03 AM.
