AoS and DOVO
Was just cruising through the usual sites and saw that Art of Shaving is selling DOVO straights now, in addition to TI. Is this new? I swear just a few weeks ago they were only offering TIs. Just an FYI post.

I saw that recently, too. The previous times I'd looked they only had TI's. I think it's pretty cool that they are diversifying, but unfortunate that they put their name on everything.

I agree. Too bad they brand each razor with the company name but OTOH it is good advertising.
I'm still curious if the edge is factory or if it's honed by someone. I can remember one thread someone mentioned the AoS in Denver was looking for honers. I have some vacation coming up next week, maybe I'll drive over there and see if they will let me test drive the Dovo on some whiskers.Last edited by Logistics; 12-29-2010 at 12:57 PM.

They certainly are not the first do do so. I have some old Solingen razors with American company names on them, as well. I probably will end up buying a razor from them in the future. Their TIs have the C135 steel and now that AOS offers DOVO, there is a good variety in which to choose. If nothing else, I can justify the purchase by saying I am supporting a wet shave company with (IMO) good products.

You do realize that AoS is Procter and Gamble... aka Gillette and Mach3? (there's a reason why they push Mach 3's with fancy handles in those shops).
It's a way for the goop-in-a-can people to make money off us--the anti-goop-in-a-can crowd.
Don't get me wrong, I think they have great products... just don't think it's some mom-n-pop wet shaving company.

Don't you worry. I was never under the impression that AoS was a mom n pop kind of place. But that si good information if someone doesn't know it. In fact, because they are NOT is a good thing. Large corporations that have millions of dollars at their disposal can influence consumers much quicker than a "mom n pop" place. You may not get that same warm and cozy feeling when shopping at AoS compared to shopping with small business owner, but I do know that if more people shop at AoS their retail research is going to show that the straight razor wet shaving market is booming. Which means more products and, hopefully, better products geared towards wet shavers. That is the beauty of capitalism and a free market right? Laissez faire.

Agreed and yes it means that someone at P&G sees potential in the higher end shaving market.
As for the Dovos, I don't think you're going to see them being pushed too hard in AoS. P&G doesn't make straights so they're going to always push the Mach variants first. They're selling them because they realize that there are people like us out there who won't buy a cartridge razor... so they'd rather sell us someone else's straight and at least make a small profit than sell us nothing at all in the razor department.
When it comes to consumer products the rule generally is:
- First try to sell the customer your highest margin product
- If that doesn't work try to get them to buy one of your lower margin products
- If all else fails make sure they at least buy something from you, even if it means selling them someone else's product.
The above applies to razors and AoS although in regards to creams and such P&G is taking more of an up selling approach since they previously only sold low end goop--trying to up sell goop-in-a-can users to a better quality (or in the eyes of P&G higher margin) product.
For P&G the high margin shaving products are AoS creams/AS/etc. and Mach cartridges... and if you go into a P&G shave shop (aka AoS) that's what they push.
In the end, it's good for us since it opens the eyes of more gentlemen to the idea that there's more than just goop-in-a-can out there.
