Thanked: 0Looking for a new straight razor.
I'm interested in getting a new straight razor. I used to shave with a Dovo Bismark 6/8" Carbon Steel. Just looking for something popular and can shave with for years to come. I don't like buying junk and I know Dovo makes great blades, but what would work? Usually there is that one blade everyone praises. Thats what I'm looking for.
I appreciate any advise given.

Many nice razors out there. If you want to buy a vintage razor, check the classifieds on this website. There are many members selling very nice vintage razors.

Thanked: 50I have a Dovo Bismarck and it shaves like a champ. I can highly recommend it. Be sure to get it from a shop which hones them. Factory edges on a Dovo seem to be a little under par(from what I've heard). The razor itself is very sturdy and handles well. There is a review on the site about it.

I've got a bismark, and love it. (Going to shave with it in a few minutes as a matter of fact.) What happened to yours?
Oh, and while there are many brands that everyone praises, I don't think there is one brand that stands out so far from the rest. We are, after all, talking about a simple piece of metal. If its made with decent steel and a good edge is put on it, then you can get great shaves out of it.
Check out this page. There are two links, one to known quality razors, and another of things to avoid. The beginners shopping list is good as well. Hell, all of it is almost a must read for any beginner!

The WIKI on the menu bar above has a starting point for razors to purchase and razors to avoid. Dovo makes a good razor and the Bismark is made by Dovo. A big factor in a razor's performance is who honed the edge and how well did they do. Be sure to have your razor professionally honed. The most popular razor may not be the best one for you. Only a try would tell. Check the classifieds section here on SRP. Most are good razors with good edges. Check the seller's time on SRP, post history and sales history to aid in selecting a razor. Good luck.
