Default Dovo Red Bone Scales - Care of

I just got a Dovo Red Bone and love it! However, if/when the scales get wet, the red dye comes off rather quickly.

When the red dye "bleeds", it doesn't seem to change the color of the scales so I'm wondering if it is just excess dye or something to worry about. Is there a trick to preventing the dye from coming off?

    Hope someone can help.

    Thanks,
    Michael

I never had dyed bone so I'm only guessing but maybe a wax on the scales, like Renaissance Wax Amazon.com: Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax Polish: Home Improvement, may prevent the bleeding.

I don't see why the dye should come off at all. I would discuss it with whoever you bought it from. If it stops after a few uses and the color of the bone doesn't fade it might be OK. However if it doesn't stop eventually the color will fade.

Thank you gentlemen. I've found a couple of others experiencing the same thing. Going to try the wax. Sounds like the perfect solution. Will let you know how it works out. Thanks!

I bought the same dovo (the scales at least) and experienced the exact same thing. Being brand new to straight shaving I returned it to the vendor which I bought it from, knowing what I know now I probably would have kept it.

The wax works like a charm! Still had a slight bleed but I think it was from the insides of the scale which I tried cover with the wax as best I could but may have missed a spot or two. Still, it's fantastic stuff. Never heard of it before but says that museums use it to maintain their collection.

I know it says that it can be used on metals and I'm sure it will protect the blade from rust but is it safe to put on the blade being that the razor can cut you?

By the time you finish stropping the blade I doubt there will be any wax on the bevel. There are some people here that do use it on their blades and have not heard any ill effects fro it's use. I use oil or Tuf-Glide on the blades most of the time.
