Thanked: 43My newest aquisition - but it needs a little love
So... I popped by an antique shop and - lucky me - found a new lot of razors. After a little bit of deliberation, I came home with this:
It has a few bits of rust, but it appears to just be surface grime, some slight patina, and there's an issue with the scales - or one scale. Look 1/3 of the way down from the pivot, along the back/bottom side of the scale - this is where the price tag was taped, and when I peeled the tape off at home, part of the freakin scale came with it!
Here's the stamp -
Crappy camera won't take close-ups but says: "Jose Montserrat Pou" "Doble Temple" "Filarmonica"
One more for the road -
Couple of questions - can the scale be easily repaired? The segment that peeled off is not all that deep - should I just sand it down, or is there a "filler" that I can use? Or does anyone think that they are rotten and just plain done?
Also - anyone have any idea of the age of this guy? I've seen so many No. 13's posted here, and each looks a little different. Just wondering. Thanks for any info and thanks for looking.
(PS - they also have a nice looking John Primble India Steel... may pick that up too. Damn this new hobby!)

Repair
if you wanted to repair this you have two choices as I see it, build up some ca in the area and then sand the area flush to the surrounding material followed by either polishing to match or re surfacing the scales to an overall new finish. I would think re-finishing the entire scale would give an overall better appearance. The same thing could be done with an epoxy. I cant see really how deep it is but that would be how I would determine which I used.

if the scale broke off so easy it means the plastic has deteriorated and gotten brittle. it's probably not worth trying anything hard to fix it.
if it were me i'd just leave it as it is, may be sand the roughness a little so that it's nicer to hold and use it until it breaks further, then replace it with something else. actually i'll try bending it a little bit to see if it seems structurally good, if not i'd replace it right away as i don't want to end up with an injury or broken blade.
remember it's the blades, not the scales that makes the filarmonica razors desirable.
