My first frame back
I just got my first faux frame-back in the mail yesterday, a Joseph Elliot's Best Silver Steel. Its a little over 7/8", has a lead spacer and weighs a ton, well not a ton but its pretty heavy at 2.6 oz. It needs a little cleaning up, and some new scales. I was wondering if anyone here has shaved with one or has any info about this make they can share. I have been looking but can't find much in the way of a joseph elliots frame back.
Thanks fellas
Louis.

Louis;
That is a handsome razor, sir. Once it is cleaned up and properly honed I'm sure you will be very happy with it.

Thanked: 45nice razor.
Very strange shape, dont know if it would actually be a frameback as they normally have a flat blade and this one looks more wedge shaped

Sweet razor! I had one once and really liked it. I call them "hammerheads" cause that's what they remind me of end on. I'm sure you'll love shaving with her.

I saw that auction and nearly bid on it.
The razor itself is beautiful, but what intrigued me is that scratched into the scales is "Shiloh Battle", which was a VERY important battle in the Civil War.
There's no way to know if it's authentic or not, but I can easily imagine a soldier who survived that horrible battle etching that into it as a reminder. A razor is a deeply personal thing, and something more "permanent" to write on.
It's difficult to imagine anyone "faking" an inscription like that, esp as it wasn't sold as Civil War memorabilia. Plus, the razor looks to be of that vintage.
I'd be curious as to what others have to say about this. All I'll say is FOR PETE'S SAKE DON'T GET RID OF THOSE (possibly) PRECIOUS SCALES.
That history is sacred and should not be tossed in a trash can. Use it as-is with pride or send it to a Civil War museum, preferably not even cleaned up (original condition is VERY important with such things).
I didn't bid because I assumed a Civil War collector was onto it. I have a mountain of Civil War stuff in the family, and it means alot to us, and that razor means alot too.

Nice razor. I'm a big fan of the framebacks, especially the antique ones.

Thanked: 317It's technically a faux frameback, but not because the main blade is wedge shaped. Some framebacks are made that way. It's a faux frameback because the "frame" and the blade are all one piece, where in a true frameback, the blade is pressed into the frame.
That said, I really like the look of that razor, and think it ought to restore nicely. Besides, I like faux framebacks better anyway.
