What have I got here?
Gentlemen and regular users,
I've done it again. Yes, I've logged into eBay with the predictable results. Attracted by the wider blade, which is pleasing to my eye, I wound up the owner of the razor in the photos.
I tried to follow advise, as posted, and looked for hone wear, edge pitting and all the common pitfalls, and bid low. And won. Once again, very little money.
It arrived yesterday, while I was away on business. After a bit of talking and catching up with my better half I open the box. I'm very surprised that it looks so... new. The box has hardly any wear, and suspiciously no writing, logos or anything except the small scroll you can see. The blade has no stains, rust or pitting. And no name either; on the tang it's stamped "Real German" and "Hollow Ground".
Then I turn it over and it's, well, flat. Completely flat, as if they forgot to grind it. I don't know if this is normal or if I'm holding a defective razor.
Have anyone seen one like this?
Any insight is appreciated.

that would be a microtome. Used for slicing specimens to put under a microscope. They can be made into shavers. Ive got 2 of them.

Thanked: 68Hi Snake
Been meaning to ask for a while...
Why do you fear me?
We've never met & I'm not that scary
Possibly this is an example of the little known German Kamisori
Will wait for replies more knowledgeable than mine

Don't do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the paramedics!

simpleman,
Thank you for the fast response identifying the beast. If I were capable of shame I'd be mortified now! This is not to say I'm happy about it, far from it.
Do you shave with yours? After you told me what it was I found an old thread by JimmyHAD where he actually honed one and used it, but I fear my skills and materials are lacking. (As in I have no skills and I have no hones kind of lacking.)
I paid very little for it (or a lot, considering it's not a straight razor) so I'm thinking I'll hold on to it for the future, when I have the tools and perhaps even skill to try this. Or until I get over my shame and try to sell it.
It breaks my heart, it's so pretty from the ground side...
*sigh*

If it's not a straight how come they made it with a monkey tail? Not that it doesn't add considerable style...

That's so weird, how do you slice without the blade moving?

My theory is seeing how these were probally made by the razor companies of past it was easier to use there razor blanks instead of having to change production for the microtomes. After all It is kind of half a razor.

It's obvious now, thanks. I envisaged holding the handle and chopping like you would with a knife.
