antique store find today
found another Torrey to add to my collection. Not in good shape, but it will give me the opportunity to learn how to restore. I cleaned some of the rust off today after I got home and found it was much darker patina than I have seen before -- almost black.
The blade is the widest I have found also, more than 6/8 at least -- maybe a 7/8. Considering I have started with a 4/8, this should be interesting

I am going to try and save the scales. I have two razors that I want to learn how to restore with (both Torreys) and I have one Pakistan blade. I want to practice on the Paki blade first and learn how to remove the scales then I'll try this one.
These seem to have a small crack on one end that is not fully through, but has bled some discoloration through and on the other end, it looks like the manufacturor may have slipped when trying to cut these out.
Any ideas how to save the crack?

Torrey's are good shavers. If yo don't mind loosing the etching you could have a really nice looking razor. There is one spot of rust near the bevel that may be an issue. Scrape the rust off with a single edge razor blade from the hardware store to get close to the metal. Start setting the bevel before restoring to see if there is any pitting close to the edge. If so, get the pitting out.
If a blade is to be rusted I prefer the red rust over the black stuff. Teh red doesn't eat as far below the surface of the metal as much as the black stuff does. Of course if the red rust looks lile moss growing on the blade it probably will be deep. No telling how deep the black stuff will be. Good luck!“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Thanked: 1263Not bad. As long as that rust near the edge doesn't pose a problem you'll have a real nice razor there. Congrats!
