Default Mappin & Compy.... Yes, Compy not Webb...yet

Purchased a pair of Mappin & Compy Ivory scaled razors today on ebay UK... Having owned several Mappin razors in the past I really was thrown by the "Compy" ( abbreviated Co./ Company) designation. Dug into the internet and found out that it pre-dates Mappin Webb and was the outcome of a falling out of the Mappin Brothers. Maybe some of you Gents knew this....but it was a new one on me... Excited to get this pair of "Compy" razors on this side of the Atlantic. I had not seen a tang stamp of Mappin & Compy til bidding on these. The razors were produced then between 1859 and 1864...after that....tang stamp would have been Mappin & Webb.

Here is the blurb I found that led me to the discovery...

Mappin & Co were a very short lived entity so we can date your object very precisely. John Newton Mappin and his 3 brothers inherited the company of their father Joseph Mappin and renamed it Mappin Brothers. John Newton Mappin fell out with his brothers and founded his own company, Mappin & Co. in 1859. He opened a shop at 77-78 Oxford Street in 1860. Mappin & Co lasted until 1864 when J N Mappin took his brother in law George Webb into partnership and the company became Mappin, Webb & Co. It became Mappin & Webb in 1868

    nice score mike.
do you have a source for that history? it seems like a good one to go into the wiki under the company, so that it's easy to find in the future.

well, i have a whole bunch of various mappins, i knew there was a family drama that resulted into a number of different companies with similar names, but since i never bothered to find anything more specific i am not quite sure what the tang stamps on mine are.

i ought to round them all up one of these days and take the family photos

i do have one very long one i haven't seen another one of, i bet over 3" wedge and could be a 7/8, the rest you've definitely seen examples of - lancets, special steels, nulli secundi...

There're many interesting things in our WIKI, including the history of Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb Co.
Razors from these companies are awesome. I have one.

Another one! There must be a whole series of Mappin razors over the years. I've got a Jos Mappin (Lancet Edge), a Mappin and Sons and a Mappin and Webb. Now I've got another one to hunt out. Thanks for the info. I reckon that they're great razors.

Mike, if you insist on poking at the embers of my SRAD I may find it necessary to place you on the 'Ignore" list.

Mappin razors of any era are some of my favorites.

They need some clean-up but for the price they are keepers.
