Default NEW GUY. RAZOR ANY GOOD?

Hey a newbie here, I am getting into buying, restoring, and using straight razors. i just purchased a new razor on ebay. It is a FRIEDR BAURMANN & SOHNE 50 COMFORT. I dont know much about it and was looking to see if anyone can tell me about it, if it could be a decent shaver and if i got a alright deal. looking to clean it up and restore it, the blade doesn't look to far gone. I paid $20 for it. Did i do good or no? what do these usually run value wise? Thanks for your help!

As far as $ value, you may as well edit that part out of your post. Anything that even sounds like an appraisal or request for one is strictly forbidden on these forums. Because we're talking about functional items rather than strictly collectible antiques, the value is whatever price makes both the buyer and seller satisfied.

That particular razor isn't a brand I'm personally familiar with, but it appears to be in good shape, and should be a good shaver once properly honed.

I don't see any visible defects that wouldn't be fixed with some MAAS and elbow grease.

I got that. Obviously, I'm not a mod, but I've seen plenty of mods take umbrage at folks posting a price they paid and asking if it was a good deal or not. Regardless, I stand by what I said. The only good deal is one where the buyer and seller are satisfied.

Get it cleaned and sharpened and learn how to use it and then, if you're happy with the results, you'll know the answer. For what it's worth, the razor looks like it's in good shape and that brand is, like most (all in my limited experience) Solingens, a good one. You don't look to have over paid for it but bear in mind that an advisable route to follow will be to send it out for sharpening at least. This will set you back a further 20-30 bucks. One of the reasons that valuations are frowned upon here is that they are very subjective, ie what I would consider a good price may bear no relation to what you or anybody else would. For example, the current flavour of the month are the Filharmonicas that go for prices that I don't even consider paying, but there are lots of satisfied customers out there, so what do I know?

    Hi and welcome to SRP.

    From the FAQ:
I inherited/bought/found a straight razor - how much is it worth?
We believe that there is no point to give appraisals as everybody values razors differently. Also, those who are quickest to put numbers are usually the least knowledgeable about razors. Last, there is a huge hype factor attached to many razors so their free market value can fluctuate by factors of 2 to 3 back and forth depending on the demand and supply.
