Thread: Small rust.advice

Problem with carbon steel T.Issard blade. At the point of rivit there was some water left and withing 2 days saw rust appearing.

I scraped off most of it...but seems a little bit has stained the metal. Any advice on what i can do perhaps from spreading it.

I alternate my straight blade between T.Issard and Dovo. For now i dry them to best I can; and leave in sunlight for 2-3 mins to dry off any water in hard to reach places.
Still concerned a little about rust spread? Adivce be helpful. Luckly rust is not on the sharp blade itself.

I have an eye dropper full of mineral oil, that I use
after I shave, that I work into the pivot joint.

Considering that I live in cold, salty, foggy San Francisco
It seems to work for me.

You can sometime use dental floss (the ribbon like one) with some mineral oil, to clean around the pivot point.

so any mineral oil? As I know we are men with toys ^_^ rangin from 100-500 bux. Hence have to be in lack of words "considerate". I did a google search n price range from 6-14 bucks.
Using floss is excellent adive.

I live in South FL. So humid and hot days are well 'most' of the days down south.
I would have been so screwed had rust been on the sharp blade. I knew about rust catching and completely forgot about the pivot part.

If you removed the active rust and keep the area dry, it won't spread. To get the staining off you'd have to take the razor apart and remove the metal (sand or buff or whatever).

Personally, I don't like putting oil into the pivots, because it will attract and hold dirt and grime and gunk. Keep it dry and you'll never have a problem.

that is what I've been doing thus far ever since cleaning of the rust. Just have a small piece of dry cloth (mainly clean gym tshirt) that i poke thru with tooth pick. And then leave out in sun for 2-3 mins.

thank you all for feedback. I finally was able to procure the shaving dvd. Funny as I've been doin straight razor for a year now. And in last few days I've been just obssesed with the perfect shave exprience.

Keep a chamois cloth piece hanging in your shave den.Whenever you need to wipe off residual moisture or dry your scales,it works great and won't harm your blade.Also,Camellia oil can be purchased from straight razor designs.It's what they use on their blades.Whatever oil you use you should always apply it after wiping your blade down before storing.

A tip I got from someone on this site, whom I can't recall, for keeping the pivot area dry, is to use a can of compressed air to blow any trapped moisture out of there.
