Cannot pay me to use my DOVO anymore
Maybe I can be paid... but I wouldn't use it for any other reason. Why?
I recently sent two vintage razors to Max to be honed, one an SR. Droescher 'Blacksmith' and the other a Case's Ace. Tonight I decided to try the Droescher first and... wow. I would never have believed it if someone told me there would be that much of a difference.
Maybe Max is just THAT good at honing (and not that he isn't) but I truly credit the razor. One pass WTG out-did my normal two with my Dovo prima silver-steel.
Obviously this is just my opinion based on one experience, but it was so great that I just can't put these two blades in the same league. I'm super excited to try the Case's Ace tomorrow.
Big thanks to Max for the great hone job!

You could eliminate variables by sending your Dovo to Max as well. That would allow a better comparison from which you could draw your conclusions.
That said, Case and SRD both make fantastic razors, so I'm not surprised you love them.

My girlfriend purchased a 13/16 Droescher Blacksmith as a Christmas gift and it is a superb shaver indeed so I know where you are coming from. It shaves as well as former blades I owned from Dubl Duck and Bismarck Registered which are both top notch. As for the Case's Ace, fantastic as well... I owned one as well as 2 Genco Easy Aces. You will be hard pressed to find better shavers than you have.

I've had my Dovo honed by both Lynn and Glen. It simply doesn't out perform my vintage blades (also honed by Glen), and I know it is not some mental difference because the blade I like the look of the least is the one that shaves the best by far. I'm not sure what makes the difference but I can feel it.

I agree, it wasn't something that my mind artificially made me believe. I had always wondered if everyone could really tell the difference between razor brands, etc. just as I wonder if great golfers can really feel difference between ProV1 and ProV1x golf balls.
It went from a gentle 'scrape' hair removal with my dovo to the SRD which silently melted away my stubble like a warm knife through butter. It was absolutely amazing.

aye, the DOVO still gets the job done but my Torrey is like butter. Granted I know some here will tell you a Bengal does really well too but I found mine not very forgiving on being off angle at all, although it will glide through the thickest of hair.
Now all my blades are different sizes so that may make a difference for each person. I don't doubt someone could come to my house and use all my supplies and pick different favorites.
I just think sometimes the difference in performance goes beyond who honed it.

It's great that all of you are finding differences in razors and their shaving characteristics. Now that you have found differences in edges go for it and enjoy. In a few weeks, months or what ever it takes you will find that the person honing your razor and the type of day they are having will effect your razor's shave quality to a level that you are experiencing now, as Holli stated above.
I have lots of razors and a few of the same make. I can tell you that some of the razors of the same make shave better than others. I hone all of my own razors with a few exceptions. I attribute the difference in shave quality to my experience in honing since these razors were purchased and honed over a period of time even though some of the earlier honed razors shave better than the newer ones, the type of day I was having and how much time I could put into honing and lastly the variance in heat treating, tempering and metallurgy. In the end I have a strong belief based on proof that on the razors I went back to hone, they shaved much better even though they shaved good to begin with.
Long story short, good razors and a good honing makes a great shave. If it's a good razor and you think it can shave better send it back to the hones.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

I have a few new Dovo's, a Bergischer Lowe and a Mamouth and another I can't think of right now and they are all great shaving razors. Are there others that outshave them? Sure, but the Dovo's are still great.
