Thanked: 1Magic Razor vs real straight
I am new to the world of straight razors. I picked up an old shumate razor last week from an antique shop for $5 that i plan on sending out to have honed and polished. I have been using a magic razor to practice and i was wonder how much better shaving is with a real straight as opposed to the magic razor disposable.

Thanked: 190I have used other disposable straight razors when learning to shave. Your Shumate should feel stiffer and be more forgiving in its shave. You will likely keep using the Magic razor until you develop some proficiency with the Shumate. Eventually, if all is done right, you will likely prefer the Shumate since you can get the consistant shave you like day in and day out.
I always liked the performance of my disposable blades on their 2nd or 3rd shave the most. The 1st was crazy sharp and alway generated a few small weepers and was less forgiving on XTG movements and the 5th shave just didn't have the edge to perform well. With this being said, I keep my fixed straight razors tuned to the type of shave I like to get every shave. There is also more involved in keeping your fixed straight performing...example: Leather Strop, pasted paddle strop, barber hone, honing stones, or sending it out to honemeister...etc.
Good Luck and welcome to Straight Shaving,
