Default Please help me pick a new razor.

I've tried and own probably every blade grind, from full hollow, to wedge—and even Japanese, and I've come to realize that only the finer hollow blades give me the shave I want and need. The farther I go away from hollow grinds, the worse the results with my extra sensitive skin, and milti-directional, thick hair.

My goto blade is my Filarmonica...

...and my main question is: what other razor or razors would you say are about the same, AS GOOD, or as close as possible to a Filly?

Thank you all in advance for your response.

Lots of blades are similar to the Filarmonicas. Similar, not equal. IMO.

From what I have in my collection I would recommend vintage Dorko's, Palmera Estralujo, or even Ducal.
I've seen C-mon's with similar grind too.
I have been on a Filarmonica RD as well, having bought an obscene amount of them. I use them all, and love the shave I get from them.
There's a couple of threads on this forum that discusses this ad nauseam
Search them out and see what other brands are in the same area, grind-wise and size-wise

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

    ISaid,

You could consider an American razor - all the American razors I have had have been super shavers

My favourite straight is my Genco Fluid Steel - this is very hollow ground, and is a fantastic shaver for me !

    Good luck !

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

You may consider a "new" custom razor. The modern steels & heat treatments are cutting edge & the style some of these guys give them are out of this world!

A vintage LeGrelot. Fantastic shaves. I think they are every bit as good as Filarmonica.

    New Razor

I agree with PhatMan on the Gencos. I have about 15 of them and there isn't a bad one in the bunch. You might also consider a Geneva razor as they wil give you a similar shave quality to the Genco. Genevas were made in NY. I also like blades by W R Case.

And just as an experiment, I think you should send your favorite blade to one of the honemeisters and ask them to finish it on an escher stone and see if that improves the quality of your shaves with that particular blade. I think it is worth a try. I recently acquired an escher and there is a difference that is noticeable in the feel of the shave.

P S Has anyone seen that new website "www.razorandstone.com" ? I'm going to check it out before the end of this week.

If you are getting radically different results with different sizes and grinds it's not the razor it's the way you are using them. You face only see's the very edge so if there are differences it's either because they weren't shave ready or you are doing something different with them either consciously or not.

Default Fluid Steel is really nice.

you describe liking a very flexible extra hollow. The blade most like that for me has been the Duck Special # 1, which MrSell told me about. I understand the other ducks are similarly extra hollow, but I've not yet shaved w/ the others. Spec # 1 is very satisfying.

That website looks empty mrsell63. I didn't see any posts. Maybe I'm not looking in the right spot?
